Insta Diary | How To Take The Perfect Selfie
Hello loves! I hope that you are having a wonderful day and I think that you are really going to like this post! I am starting a new series here on To Style, With Love called Insta Diaries after the amazing response I got from an older post entitled, How To Make Your Instagram Visually Appealing. In this space and new series we will open up a dialog and start talking all about everything that makes and breaks you in the social media world. I hope you all enjoy! As we all know selfies have become the way of life for us millennials and even our moms, dads and bad ass grannies like Baddie Winkle are taking over the sensation. I don’t claim to be the utmost authority on taking a good selfie but it always seems like IT girls such as Kylie Jenner or Chiara Ferragni and Instagram models like FatherKels or Killer and a Sweet Thang, Golden Barbie and Mara Teigan seem to know what they’re doing when it comes to taking a popular page worthy selfie. So today I’m going to help you break down the science of it all and by the end you should be able to master taking the perfect selfie. Goodbye drab and hello fab Instagram feed!
Lighting may very well be the most important key to taking a good selfie. You can see here above me doing some trial and error when taking a selfie at the Chateau Marmont. A simple movement of the head or shift of the chin can change the lighting in your selfie perfectly. Natural lighting is generally the best for selfies and don’t forget that you are always supposed to face the sun or the light that you are using in your photo. By doing this the light hits your face better and shows off your natural highlights, contours and your beautiful face of course, it can even help to naturally blur imperfections! If you don’t have natural lighting available at the moment of your selfie, consider using a makeup light, the flash on your phone or even the front facing flash on snapchat (although the quality won’t be quite as good). Just move around until you find your best natural light and then snap away.
You may think that the only way to take a selfie is to simply look straight ahead at the camera and make your best pouty face (please no duck faces). In fact there are an endless number of different ways that you can pose for a selfie. It’s all about the angles. Try playing around in the camera and finding which angles suit you best, this way you will always know which pose to go for when snapping a quick selfie. Never settle for taking a selfie in just one pose or from just one angle, make sure you move around a bit and I promise that you will be pleasantly surprised with some of the interesting photos that you come up with.
A few suggestions on getting a great pose.. try playing with your hair or hands, touch your face or lips. Start moving your jewelry or play around with your earrings or sunglasses. You can even try tilting the camera from side to side at different angles too! Doing all of this while finding your best angle in the light will ensure your best selfie yet!
Having a good background in your selfie is essential! No one wants to see a selfie in your incredibly messy bedroom or bathroom with dim lighting or you in front of some trashcans cuz that just happened to be your location that you decided to take a selfie! With my examples above you can see that one background is clearly better than the other. The backgrounds don’t have to be busy and chaotic, in fact it’s better if they are more simple so that the photo can focus on you yourself, after all it IS called a selfie! I wouldn’t want to post that selfie waiting in line at Coachella with a random lady ruining it in the background, no no pretty pink tiles and a dash of nature at my favorite tea spot are much better and waaayyyy more aesthetically pleasing.
Selfies do NOT have to be taken alone! Grab your bestie, a new blogger friend or your boo boo and snap a quick one if there is no one else around to take a photo of you both. Don’t forget ALL the same rules apply such as lighting, background, posing and angles are just as important when there are two or more of you. Make sure that you and your group pose cohesively so that your selfie is symmetrical and not a bit off or awkward in the end.
Hint: These kinds of selfies are generally really really cute when you and your group are doing something super cute like 1) attending NYFW 2) drinking boba tea and 3) hitting Malibu at sunset.
I am always an advocate of editing a photo to make the photo the best that it can possibly be. I am not talking about facetuning your whole entire face so that you look like an entirely different person! No no, I mean adjusting the lighting or shadows, adding details to your eyes and lips to make them appear as bright as they truly are and maybe blurring out that blemish that’s getting in the way that day. Just make sure that you don’t go too far, the best part about a selfie is that they are candid and raw meaning that they really show off YOU so don’t ruin it by using too many dramatic filters.
Ahhh, the classic mirror selfie. These can be horribly horribly ruined by trashy girls posing in their skivvies in a messy bathroom or a douchebag boy lifting his shirt to peek at his abs while poking his tongue out. These are a no no and I do not recommend them. Do not let these types of mirror selfies scare you away from the adorable photos that you can get. A big key to a successful mirror selfie I truly believe is background and if not that then content meaning YOU! For example they are great to show off your new phone case, dress, makeup, earrings, anything! Show them off yourself by using the closest mirror with a nice background.
A chic hotel bathroom such as the Beverly Hills Hotel in the top row or the Chateau Marmont in the row just above always makes for a pretty cute pic, or if the hotel sports other mirrors in or around a chic setting try taking a snap. Some other perfect photo ops include stellar dressing rooms like the ones at Nasty Gal above, Minnie Mouse’s House at Disneyland :P or any other mirror in some sort of cute setting of course.
Most importantly my loves just RELAX! None of this is all that important so don’t stress if some days you can’t seem to get the perfect shot! Trust me, I deal with that alllll the time. Relax and have fun that’s the point of social media and playing around taking photos is all simply and purely for your own self satisfaction and enjoyment!
